Fairytale of New York – Merry Christmas from Rapalje<\/h2>\n

Fairytale of New York met lyrics gespeeld tijdens een video die we speciaal voor het UMC Utrecht hebben opgenomen. Het gorgelen van de melodie met whisky begon als een grap toen we dit nummer voor het eerst leerden, als je echt geen enkel instrument kan bespelen, kan je altijd nog de drank gebruiken, we hebben het sindsdien in het nummer gehouden. We hebben de refrein melodie aan het einde verlengd omdat we dit deel van het nummer graag spelen.<\/p>\n

Background Info<\/h2>\n

Fairytale of New York van The Pogues werd opnieuw uitgeroepen tot het meest populaire kerstlied van het VK in 2019. We spelen het het hele jaar door en het is een van onze meest gevraagde nummers sinds we het begonnen te spelen! “Fairytale of New York” is een nummer geschreven door Jem Finer en Shane MacGowan en opgenomen door hun band The Pogues, met singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl als zanger. Het nummer is een ballad in Ierse folkstijl en is geschreven als een duet, waarbij MacGowan, de zanger van de Pogues, de rol van het mannelijke personage op zich neemt en MacColl het vrouwelijke personage.<\/p>\n

Hoewel de band het erover eens is dat “Fairytale of New York” voor het eerst werd geschreven in 1985, wordt de oorsprong van het nummer betwist. MacGowan hield vol dat het ontstond als gevolg van een weddenschap van de toenmalige producer van de Pogues, Elvis Costello, dat de band geen kersthits zou kunnen schrijven, terwijl de manager van de Pogues, Frank Murray, heeft verklaard dat dat wel zo was. oorspronkelijk zijn idee dat de band zou moeten proberen een kerstlied te schrijven omdat hij dacht dat het “interessant” zou zijn.<\/p>\n

Banjospeler Finer bedacht de melodie en het originele concept voor het nummer, dat zich afspeelde in County Clare aan de westkust van Ierland, met een zeeman in New York die uitkijkt over de oceaan en herinneringen ophaalt aan zijn thuiskomst in Ierland. Finers vrouw Marcia hield niet van het originele zeevarende verhaal en stelde nieuwe teksten voor over een gesprek tussen een paar met Kerstmis. Finer vertelde NME: “ Ik had twee nummers geschreven, compleet met deuntjes, de ene had een goede melodie en slechte teksten, de andere had het idee voor ‘Fairytale’ maar de melodie was poxy, ik gaf ze allebei aan Shane en hij gaf het een Broadway melodie, en daar was het.<\/p>\n
