The shanty was sung to accompany certain work tasks aboard sailing ships, especially those that required a bright walking pace. It is believed to originate in the early 19th century or before, during a period when ships’ crews, especially those of military vessels, were sufficiently large to permit hauling a rope whilst simply marching along the deck. With the advent of merchant packet and clipper ships and their smaller crews, which required different working methods, use of the shanty appears to have declined or shifted to other, minor tasks. The presale for the Rapalje Zomerfolk Festival 2018 starts at 11 am! On 9 and 10 June 2018, for the sixth time, the Stadspark in Groningen will be transformed into a world where every folk lover will feel at home. The first headliner has already been announced: the Red Hot Chilli Pipers!
Have you already set your alarm for tomorrow morning 11 o’clock? That is when the pre-sale for Zomerfolk 2018 starts! We have something new this year (instead of the successful goodie bags); the Early Bird Weekend Ticket + Special Surprise! In recent years the special tickets always sold out within one or two days; this year 200 of these tickets will be available.
We won’t tell you what the surprise is yet, but we promise that you will be very happy with it, so make sure you’re ready! Because of the already announced Red Hot Chilli Pipers who will be on our stage on Sunday 10 June, we expect the tickets to go faster than ever so do not wait too long. And of course these tickets are great fun to give and receive as a Sinterklaas gift or Christmas present!
